Buyer's Guide
How much should you spend on an engagement ring in the UK?

This question comes up every single day in the showroom: how much should I spend on an engagement ring? There's a lot of nonsense online about this. Here's what's actually true in the UK in 2026.
The "three months' salary" rule is a marketing slogan
It was invented by De Beers' advertising agency in 1947 to sell more diamonds. There is no financial logic to it. Ignore it.
What UK couples actually spend
Based on UK industry data and our own client base across hundreds of bespoke commissions:
- UK average: £2,500–£3,500
- London median: £4,500–£6,500
- Bespoke Hatton Garden clients: £4,000–£15,000
- High-net-worth / collector clients: £25,000–£250,000+
The honest answer: spend what you can comfortably afford without taking on debt. There's no number you "should" hit.
What your money actually buys
£1,500–£3,000
A nicely-made solitaire with a smaller natural diamond (0.4–0.6ct) in 18ct gold, or a larger lab-grown stone (1–1.5ct) in the same setting. At this budget, choose lab-grown to maximise visible size.
£3,000–£6,000
1ct natural G/VS1 solitaire in 18ct gold or platinum, or a 2ct+ lab-grown halo setting. The first budget bracket where the ring feels "obviously substantial".
£6,000–£12,000
1.5ct natural G/VS1 in any setting, or a 3ct+ lab-grown in a premium setting. Bespoke design with bespoke shoulder details. Pavé and hidden halo options open up.
£12,000–£25,000
2ct+ natural in high-end colour and clarity (E/F, VVS), or 4ct+ lab-grown. Fancy shapes (oval, emerald, pear) at premium sizes. Truly distinctive bespoke craftsmanship.
£25,000+
3ct+ natural in top colour and clarity, or rare shapes and provenance. Fully custom craftsmanship at the level of any London luxury house — at considerably less than boutique pricing.
How to stretch your budget further
- Choose lab-grown over natural. 2–3× the size for the same money. The trade-off is weaker resale.
- Drop one colour grade. G is indistinguishable from D to the eye but costs ~30% less.
- Choose VS1 over VVS1. Eye-clean at a fraction of the price.
- Skip mall and online retailers. Hatton Garden bespoke beats high-street retail markups by 30–50% for equivalent quality.
- Consider fancy shapes. Oval, emerald and pear cuts look larger per carat than round brilliant.
How much should YOU spend?
The right answer is the largest amount you can spend without it causing financial stress. Not three months' salary. Not what your friends spent. Not what Instagram shows you.
If you tell us a budget on WhatsApp, we'll show you what's realistically achievable at that number — natural and lab-grown options side by side — with no pressure either way.
Frequently asked
What is the average engagement ring budget in the UK?
Around £2,500–£3,500 for UK couples in 2026, though the median spend in London is closer to £4,500–£6,500. Bespoke clients in Hatton Garden typically spend £4,000–£15,000.
Is the 'three months' salary' rule real?
No — it was invented by De Beers in 1947 as a marketing slogan. There is no real financial rule about engagement ring spend.
Is lab-grown a way to stretch the budget?
Yes — lab-grown delivers 2–3× the carat for the same money. The trade-off is weaker resale; for many couples, that's an easy call.
How much does a 1ct diamond cost in the UK?
A 1ct G/VS1 natural ring fully set typically £6,500–£9,500. Lab-grown equivalent £1,800–£2,800. Bigger or higher-clarity stones cost considerably more.
