Lab-grown vs natural diamonds: the honest 2026 guide

This is the single most-asked question in our Hatton Garden showroom right now. Couples come in having read conflicting articles online — some swear by lab-grown, some insist natural is the only "real" option — and they want a straight answer. Here it is, from a jeweller who sells both every day.
The short answer
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They look identical, feel identical, and are graded on the same 4Cs scale. They cost 60–70% less than equivalent natural diamonds. The trade-off is weaker long-term resale value and the perception (still held by some) that "lab-grown isn't the real thing".
For maximum sparkle per pound today, lab-grown wins easily. For an heirloom that holds value over decades, natural still wins.
What's actually different?
Chemistry — nothing different
Both are pure crystallised carbon. The atomic structure is the same. Hardness is 10/10 on the Mohs scale for both. Refractive index — what makes a diamond sparkle — is identical: 2.418.
Origin — that's it
Natural diamonds formed 1–3 billion years ago, 150km underground, brought to the surface by ancient volcanic eruptions. Lab-grown diamonds are grown in 2–8 weeks in either HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) presses or CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) reactors. The end product is, atomically, the same thing.
Price — the big one
A 2ct G/VS1 round brilliant natural diamond retails around £18,000–£22,000 in London right now. The lab-grown equivalent? £3,000–£4,500. Same certificate, same specs, no eye-visible difference. That gap is what's driving the lab-grown boom.
Resale — the catch
Natural diamonds resell at roughly 30–50% of retail (depending on size, certificate, market). Lab-grown diamonds currently resell at 5–20% of retail and the trend is downward — production keeps scaling, so today's £4,000 lab-grown stone may be worth £1,500 retail in five years. If you plan to hold the ring forever, this doesn't matter. If resale is in scope, it matters a lot.
What we'd recommend, by situation
Maximum carat for budget — lab-grown
£10,000 buys roughly a 1ct G/VS1 natural or a 3ct G/VS1 lab-grown. If your partner values size and sparkle and isn't focused on resale, lab-grown is the obvious answer.
Heirloom / long-term value — natural
If the intention is to pass the ring on, hold it as an asset, or hedge against resale risk, GIA-certified natural still holds value far more reliably.
"Should look expensive" — lab-grown, in a great setting
A 2.5ct lab-grown in a great halo setting looks more impressive than a 1ct natural solitaire — and costs less. The setting matters as much as the stone for visual impact.
Travelling / everyday wear — either is fine
Both are equally hard and durable. The setting and quality of the goldsmithing matter far more than the stone origin for everyday durability.
Common myths
- "Lab-grown will shatter / cloud / discolour over time." No. It's diamond. Same hardness, same chemical stability as natural.
- "You can tell the difference under a loupe." No. Only specialised equipment (fluorescence spectroscopy) reveals growth method.
- "Lab-grown isn't certified." Wrong. IGI grades the majority of lab-grown diamonds globally; GIA also certifies them on a slightly different scale.
- "Natural is more ethical because lab-grown uses lots of energy." Both have environmental costs. Mining displaces earth and consumes diesel; lab production consumes electricity (increasingly renewable). Neither is clean — both can be done responsibly.

Yes — chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamond. IGI and GIA certify them as diamonds.
Can a jeweller tell the difference by eye?
No. Specialised testing equipment can identify the growth method via fluorescence; no jeweller can tell with a loupe or naked eye.
Will lab-grown prices keep falling?
Likely yes. Production capacity continues to scale globally — prices have already dropped ~80% in five years and the trend is downward.
Which holds value better?
Natural diamonds — particularly larger, GIA-certified stones with strong colour and clarity. Lab-grown resale is weak by comparison.
Which is more ethical?
Lab-grown avoids mining entirely. Natural diamond mining is heavily regulated under the Kimberley Process but the environmental footprint is real.
