First time in Hatton Garden? A visitor's guide to London's jewellery quarter

Hatton Garden is London's jewellery quarter — a single street between Holborn and Clerkenwell where, for over 400 years, diamonds have been cut, gold has been worked and engagement rings have been bought. If you've never been, the experience can feel intense: dozens of shop fronts, busy pavements and a real working trade going on behind every counter. Here's how to navigate it like someone who's been there before.

Getting there

• Tube: Chancery Lane (Central line) — turn right out of the station, two minutes' walk. Farringdon (Elizabeth line) — five minutes from the north end.
• Driving: Hatton Garden sits inside the Congestion Charge zone. Q-Park Holborn (Bedford Row) and NCP Saffron Hill are the closest car parks.
• Best time to visit: Tuesday to Thursday, 11:00–15:00. Most shops are quieter mid-week and you'll get more time with the jeweller.

What you'll find

Hatton Garden has three types of business, often in the same building:

• Retail jewellers — ground-floor shops with diamond rings, wedding bands, watches and finished jewellery you can buy off the shelf.
• Bespoke workshops — usually upstairs, often by appointment, where our jewellers design and hand-make custom pieces.

The street is also home to several luxury watch specialists who buy, sell, source and part-exchange Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille — almost always at meaningful savings versus brand boutiques on Bond Street.

How to buy well in Hatton Garden

1. Know what you want before you go

For diamond rings, walking in with a rough idea of carat, shape and budget will save you hours. The four Cs (cut, colour, clarity, carat) matter; so does whether you want natural or lab-grown — both are sold across the street.

2. Ask for the paperwork

Any diamond over 0.3ct should come with a GIA or IGI certificate. Any pre-owned luxury watch should be supplied with full authentication documentation and written confirmation of the inspection where offered. If a jeweller hesitates, walk to the next door.

3. See it in daylight

Hatton Garden shops use bright spotlights designed to flatter stones. Step to the window or door before committing — daylight is the only honest test of colour and brilliance.

4. Compare two or three shops

For the same stone or watch reference, prices can vary by 10–20% across the street. The shop with the most polished window is not always the a competitive quote.

5. Negotiate politely

Engagement rings and pre-owned watches almost always have movement on price. A respectful "is there anything you can do on this?" is normal practice. Diamonds bought loose with the setting commissioned separately almost always come in better than a finished ring off the shelf.

What to avoid

• "Today only" pressure tactics. A genuine Hatton Garden jeweller will hold a piece for you — there's no rush.
• Cash-only deals without paperwork. Every reputable jeweller will issue a VAT receipt, certificate and guarantee.
• Anyone offering to authenticate your watch on the street. Take it inside a showroom with an specialist watchmaker.
• Treated or coated diamonds sold as untreated. Insist on a current GIA or IGI report, not an in-house "certificate".
