1. Message us first (optional). Send a photo and rough weight on WhatsApp for a ballpark idea before you travel.

2. Bring it in. At 69 Hatton Garden we weigh and test each item in front of you and explain how the figure is calculated.

3. Get paid. Bank transfer once you accept.

Scrap gold is valued on three things: weight in grams, purity (carat), and the live spot price of gold at that moment. 18ct is 75% pure gold, 14ct is 58.5%, 9ct is 37.5% — so two chains of the same weight can be worth very different amounts.

Designer, hallmarked and antique pieces are sometimes worth more intact than as scrap. We'll tell you if that's the case rather than melting something that shouldn't be.

Photo ID (passport or driving licence) is required for all purchases. Bring any boxes, certificates or receipts you have — they help with hallmarked and designer pieces, though they aren't needed for scrap.
